Kassandra

I jerk back into my head like a band being pulled taut and then snapped. I stumble backwards a few steps as my heart pounds erratically within the confines of my rib cage. I place a hand over my breasts as I work to take in shallow breaths and modulate my breathing.

What just happened?

Why did I have that same…vision with Treyton that I had with Blaze?

Question after question begins to pile up inside of my mind, until I fear I’m suffocating underneath their combined weight. There’s nothing I can do to escape it, and the tightness in my chest is only proof of that.

It takes me a few ticks to get my bearings, and a few ticks even longer to react to what I’m seeing.

Serena is screaming, her beautiful face abnormally pale, and Cayetana has her sword drawn.

Are we under attack? Did something happen when we fell into that vision?

Then I realize the attack isn’t an unnamed foe. It’s Runt.

The tiny pacon dives between the Spring Court prince’s legs, his teeth bared and a ferocious snarl rattling his tiny body. Treyton seems dazed, completely oblivious to the creature attacking his ankles and legs, and simply blinks down at me.

I’m running forward before anyone can react, before anyone can even think to react, and pulling the little beast into my arms, directly against my chest. He struggles for a few ticks, wiggling back and forth, before he seems to realize who holds him. Almost immediately, he yips, the noise a strange combination of enthusiasm, anger, and fear, then licks at my face. His tongue is hard and scratchy, and I can’t help but grimace as it trails up the length of my cheek.

I awkwardly hold Runt away from me and give him a pointed look that eloquently says, “No pacon drool allowed.”

I swear the little monster rolls his eyes at me before leaning in closer and resting his head on my shoulder.

“That thing…” Cayetana eyes the pacon warily before slowly sheathing her sword. “You need to make sure you contain it. If it hurts someone—”

I shake my head vehemently, though I’m not sure what exactly I’m protesting. The fact that he might hurt someone? Or that she’s threatening Runt in a roundabout way?

She must see the thunderous expression on my face, because she holds her hands up in a placating manner.

“I won’t hurt the little guy, but other guards might not be as generous,” she informs me, though her eyes still appear guarded as they survey the pacon in my arms. Almost under her breath, she adds, “I’ve never heard of a pacon taking a fae as a pack member before. That is definitely an oddity.”

Before she can tell me more, Treyton jolts forward abruptly, a nearly inaudible gasp leaving his lips. His eyes flick to me, then to his ankles, and then back to me as a frown distorts his painfully handsome face.

“Why do my ankles hurt?” He scratches at his neck. “And what was that?”

“What was what?” Serena asks, but he ignores her, keeping his attention fixated on me.
